“The Book of Tea (1906)” is the masterpiece for spreading the excellence of Japanese
spirituality to the world. In this book, Okakura, the author and one of the Japan’s greatest
masters of English, gives us the commentaries on the ideas of Taoism which are
embodied in Japanese martial arts――more to come both in English and in Japanese.
The Taoists claimed that the comedy of life could be made more interesting if everyone
would preserve the unities. To keep the proportion of things and give place to others
without losing one’s own position was the secret of success in the mundane drama. We
must know the whole play in order to properly act our parts; the conception of totality
must never be lost in that of the individual.
道家の徒は主張した――もし各人が和合を保つことを欲するならば、人生の喜劇は
もっともっとおもしろいものになし得られるはずだ、と。事物の均衡を保持し、自家の
立場を失うことなしに他に譲るというのが、浮世の狂言で功を収める秘訣なのだった。
自分に振られた役を無難に勤めるのには、われわれは演技の全体を心得ていなければ
ならない。つまり、全体の概念が個別の概念のなかに断じて没却されてはならない。
This Laotse illustrates by his favorite metaphor of the Vacuum. He claimed that only in
vacuum lay the truly essential. The reality of a room, for instance, was to be found in the
vacant space enclosed by the roof and walls, not in the roof and walls themselves. The
usefulness of a water pitcher dwelt in the emptiness where water might be put, not in the
form of the pitcher or the material of which it was made.
このことを老子は「虚」についての彼の得意の隠喩で説き明かしている。彼は主張
した、――ただ空虚にのみ、真に本質的なものが存するのだ、と。たとえば、一つの
部屋の実体は、屋根や、壁で取り囲まれた空虚な空間に見出されるのであって、屋根や
壁そのものにあるのではない。水差しの用は水を注ぎこむことのできる空所にあるので
あって、それの形だとか、それを作り上げている材料だとかにあるのではない。
Vacuum is all potent because all containing. In vacuum alone motion becomes possible.
One who could make of himself a vacuum into which others might freely enter would
become master of all situations. The whole can always dominate the part.
空虚は一切を包蔵する故に万能である。空虚においてのみ運動は可能となる。人もし、
おのれを一つの空虚、他人が自由に出入することのできる空虚となすことができた
なら、随所に主となるに至るであろう。全体はつねに部分を支配することができる。
The Taoists’ ideas have greatly influenced all our theories of action, even to those of
fencing and wrestling. Jiu-jitsu, the Japanese art of self-defence, owes its name to
a passage in the Taoteiking. In Jiu-jitsu one seeks to draw out and exhaust the enemy’s
strength by non-resistance, vacuum, while conserving one’s own strength for victory in
the final struggle.
こうした道家の徒の思想は、行動に関するわが国の一切の論理に大いなる影響を
及ぼした。それは剣術や相撲の理論にまでも及んだのである。日本の自己防衛の術
である柔術は、その名を「道徳経」の中の一句に負うている。柔術にあっては、無抵抗
すなわち虚によって敵の力を引き出してこれを出し尽くさせようと力 (つと) める。一方
おのれの力は最後の闘いにおける勝利のために取っておくのである。
In art the importance of the same principle is illustrated by the value of suggestion. In
leaving something unsaid the beholder is given a chance to complete the idea and thus
a great masterpiece irresistibly rivets your attention until you seem to become actually
a part of it. A vacuum is there for you to enter and fill up to the full measure of your
aesthetic emotion.
芸術においてこれと同じ原理が肝要であることは、暗示の価値によって判明する。
何事かを言わずに残しておくところで、観る人はその思想を完成する機会を
与えられる。かくして偉大なる傑作は不可抗的に諸君の注意を奪い、ついに諸君が
実際にその作品の一部分となったかのような感を抱かせるまでに至る。空虚は諸君が
入り来って、諸君の美的情緒の満足するまでこれをみたすことを待っているのだ。
