禅など仏教をアジア以外の世界に紹介したことで有名な、鈴木大拙。彼の名を世界的に
不動のものにした英文による傑作「神秘主義」をご紹介します。誤解されることの
多い、大乗仏教の基本教義「空」について解説――バイリンガルで、どうぞ。

SUZUKI Daisetsu was a well-known figure in the introduction of Buddhism, including
Zen, to the non-Asian world. I introduce to you his English masterpiece, “Mysticism,”
which established his reputation worldwide. He gives us commentaries on “emptiness”
which is the basic doctrine of Mahayana Buddhism and frequently
misunderstood――more to come both in English and in Japanese.

When Buddha talks about all things being transient, impermanent and constantly
changing, and therefore teaches that there is nothing in this world which is absolutely
dependable and worth clinging to as the ultimate seat of security, he means that we must
look somewhere else for things permanent (jo), bliss-imparting (raku), autonomous (ga),
and absolutely free from defilement(jo).

仏陀が、すべての事物は移ろいやすく、常住性がなく、たえず変化していると説き、
したがって、この世にはこれこそ最終の安住の場所だとして、頼りきり、しがみつくに
値するものは何一つ存在しない、と語る時、その意味するところは、われわれは変化
しないもの（常）、幸せを与えてくれるもの（楽）、自律的なるもの（我）、そして、
心の穢（けが）れから完全に自由な状態（浄）は、この世以外のどこかに求めなければ
ならぬということなのである。

The Buddhist sunyata does not mean absence. A fire has been burning until now and
there is no more of it．This is another kind of emptiness.

仏教の空性（sunyata）は不在を意味するものでない。火は今まで燃え続けてきたかと
思うと、次の瞬間にはもう無いことがある。これは、もう一つ別種の空である。

Buddhist sunyata does not mean extinction. The wall screens the room: on this side
there is a table, and the other side there is nothing, space is unoccupied.

仏教の空性（sunyata）は絶滅を意味するものではない。壁は部屋に仕切りをつける。
こちら側にはテーブルがあり、あちら側には何もない。空間を塞ぐものはない。

Buddhist sunyata does not mean vacancy.

仏教の空性（sunyata）は空きを意味するものでもない。

Absence, extinction, and unoccupancy――these are not the Buddhist conception of
emptiness. Buddhists’ Emptiness is not on the plane of relativity. It is Absolute Emptiness
transcending all forms of mutual relationship, of subject and object, birth and death, God
and the world, something and nothing, yes and no, affirmation and negation.

不在・絶滅・空き――これらは仏教でいう“空” の概念ではない。仏教の“空” は、相対的
次元の話ではない。それは主観・客観、生・死、神・世界、有・無、イエス・ノー、
肯定・否定など、あらゆる形の関係を超越した絶対空である。

In Buddhist Emptiness there is no time, no space, no becoming, no-thing-ness; it is what
makes all these things possible; it is a zero full of infinite possibilities, it is a void of
inexhaustible contents.

仏教の空性の中には時間も、空間も、生成も、ものの実体性もすべてない。それは
これらすべてのものを可能ならしめるものである。それは無限の可能性に満たされた
零（ゼロ）であり、また、無尽蔵の内容をもつ空虚である。
