五木寛之の「神の発見」に曰く、かつて日本では『和魂洋才』が叫ばれたが、洋才には
『洋魂』とでも呼ぶべき精神のありようがあって、それはキリスト教文化である。明治
以来、私たち日本人は『和魂洋才』の名のもとに無理やり近代化をおしすすめてきた
が、敗戦によって和魂が否定されると、こんどは「無魂洋才」になってしまった、
と言うのです。今回より、このブログで『洋魂』=『キリスト教文化』が、いかにして
西洋人の心の支えとなり、これまでのその旺盛な活動のエネルギー源となりえたか、
その真髄に迫ってみたいと思います。そのテキストとして、G・K・チェスタトンの不朽
の名著「正統とは何か」を取り上げます――バイリンガルで、どうぞ。
Hiroyuki Itsuki says in his book “Discovery of God” that once in Japan “Japanese soul with
Western learning” was advocated, however, Western learning should get along with the
state of spirit which should be called “Western spirit,” that is Christian culture. Since the
Meiji Restoration we Japanese has been forced to become modernized in the name of
“Japanese spirit with Western learning.” But our defeat in the World WarⅡ made
“Japanese spirit” denied and then we are bound to go with “No spirit with Western
learning,” according to Itsuki. From this weblog, I try to get closer to the essence of
“Western spirit: Christian culture” which has supported Westerner’s mind and how it has
been able to become the source of energy for their vigorous activities so far. The text is
from “Orthodoxy,” the timeless masterpiece written by G・K・Chesterton――more to
come both in English and in Japanese.
These essays are concerned only to discuss the actual fact that the central Christian
theology is the best root of energy and sound ethics.
本書で問題とするところは、厳然たる事実として、キリスト教信仰の核心が。現実生活
のエネルギー源として、また健全な道徳の根源として、最善最上のものだという点を
示すこと以外にはない。
What in actual human history keeps man sane? Mysticism keeps men sane. As long as
you have mystery you have health; when you destroy mystery you create morbidity. The
ordinary man has always been sane because the ordinary man has always been a mystic.
現実の人間の歴史を通じて、人間を正気に保ってきたものは何であるのか。神秘主義
なのである。心に神秘を持っているかぎり、人間は健康であることができる。神秘を
破壊する時、すなわち狂気が創られる。平常平凡な人間がいつでも正気であったのは、
平常平凡な人間がいつでも神秘家であったためである。
The whole secret of mysticism is this: that man can understand everything by the help of
what he does not understand. The morbid logician seeks to make everything lucid, and
succeeds in making everything mysterious. The mystic allows one thing to be mysterious,
and everything else becomes lucid.
神秘主義の偉力の秘密は結局こういうことである。つまり、人間は、理解しえないもの
の力を借りることで、はじめてあらゆるものを理解することができるのだ。狂気の
論理家はあらゆるものを明快にしようとして、かえってあらゆるものを神秘不可解に
してしまう。神秘家はただ一つのことを神秘不可思議と認めることによって、実は
そのほかのあらゆるものが明快きわまりないものとなる。
The Christian puts the seed of dogma in a central darkness; but it branches forth in all
directions with abounding natural health.
キリスト教徒は、宇宙の中心の神秘の闇のうちにドグマの種子を置く。だがその種子
からは、あふれるばかり自然の生気に満ち満ちた枝々が、あらゆる方向に向かって
力強く伸び広がるのだ。
Buddhism is centripetal, but Christianity is centrifugal: it breaks out. For the circle is
perfect and infinite in its nature; but it is fixed for ever in its size; it can never be larger or
smaller.
仏教は求心的だが、キリスト教は遠心的である。それは輪を突き破って四方にあふれ
出る。円環は、その本来の性格として、完璧であり無限であるが、永遠にその大きさが
決まっている。大きくなることも小さくなることもできぬ。
But the cross, though it has at its heart a collision and a contradiction, can extend its four
arms for ever without altering its shape. Because it has a paradox in its center it can grow
without changing. The circle returns upon itself and is bound. The cross opens its arms to
the four winds; it is a signpost for free travellers.
ところが十字架は、その中心には衝突と矛盾を持ちながら、四つの腕をどこまでも、
しかも全体の形を変えぬままに遠く、遠く伸ばしてゆくことができるのだ。中心に逆説
を持てばこそ、それは形を変えずに成長してゆくことができるのだ。円環は永劫に自己
に回帰し、閉じられている。十字架は四つの方位に腕を広げ、腕を伸ばす。それは自由
の旅人の道標なのだ。
