In September of 1994, in London, Dalai Lama, the world Buddhist leader, led a seminar
concerning Christianity. It generated a great reaction all over the world. His approach at
that time provides “clues about how we find enlightenment”――more to come both in
English and in Japanese.
Above all, we must have modest ambitions as we set forth in this dialogue. In The Good
Heart, the Dalai Lama does not try or pretend to give a complete or exhaustive
commentary on the Gospels, Jesus’s teaching and life, or the deeper truths of Christian
faith such as the Resurrection and the Holy Spirit.
この対話に踏み出すときには、私たちは何よりも、つつましい野心の持ち主でなければ
ならない。『善き心』でダライ・ラマは、福音書、イエスの教えと生涯について、
また、復活や聖霊といったキリスト教信仰の深遠な真理について、完璧なあるいは
網羅的な論評を加えようともしていないし、またそうするそぶりも見せていない。
The Dalai Lama’s approach is exploratory rather than definitive, and he expands this
method to his dialogue with the Christian panelists. It is in seeking truth that we find
enlightenment, not in declaring it.
ダライ・ラマのアプローチは、完成されたものというよりも、探究的な姿勢を保った
ものであり、これはキリスト教徒のパネリストとの対話でも同じだった。これが真理で
あると宣言することにではなく、真理を「探し求める」ことによってこそ、悟りは
見つけられるものである。
Just as Saint Benedict says that the monk is one who “truly seeks God.” And in the
process of seeking, something is always found. “Seek and you will find; knock and the
door will be opened.”
聖ベネディクトが言うように、修道士とは「真に神を探し求める」者のことを言う。
そして、探し求める過程のなかで、いつも何かが見つかるのだ。「だれでも求める者は
受け、探す者は見つけ、門をたたく者には開かれる」
Reading the scriptures with a good heart takes us beyond the bleakness of today’s
deconstructionist pessimism about meaning. There is something to be found, but it is
only found in the seeking. Saint Gregory of Nyssa put it this way: “To seek God is to find
him; to find God is to seek him.”
善良な心をもって聖書を読めば、今日の脱構築論者たちの、言葉についての寒貧とした
悲観論などは、乗り越えてみせることができる。見つけだされるべきなにものかは
つねに「ある」のだが、それは「求める」ことでしか見つけることはできない。
ニュッサの聖グレゴリウスはこう言う。「神を求めることは神を見つけることであり、
神を見つけることは神を求めることである」
