日本で最も信徒が多い宗派、浄土真宗の念仏「南無阿弥陀仏」は、単純化を好む日本人
にぴったりの宗教行為かも知れません。では、その成立の歴史とは? 東洋思想の碩学、

The nembutsu “Namu Amida Butsu” of Jōdo-shinshu denomination, which has the
largest number of followers in Japan, might be the most suitable religious activity for the
Japanese who are fond of simplifying. Then how was it established? Hajime Nakamura,
a great scholar of Eastern ideas, gives commentaries on this ―― more to come both in
English and in Japanese.
In Japan, Pure Land Buddhism also developed in the sole direction of belief in, and
reliance on Amitãbha. The Pure Land Buddhism which has been prevalent in China up to
this day is conflated with Zen Buddhism and other various forms of faith. In Japan,
however, the faith in , and reliance on Amitãbha has been preserved in a purer form.
浄土教も、日本においては、ひとえにただ阿弥陀仏を信仰し帰依するというかたちで
発展した。シナや朝鮮で今日にいたるまで一般に行われている浄土教は、禅宗と融合
したものであって、その他種々の信仰形式を混在させている。ところが日本に
おいては、阿弥陀仏に帰依するという信仰が、それのみで、すなわち純粋のかたちで
あらわれている。
Hōnen preached that the period of degeneration and extinction of the Buddha law
(Mappō) has come. Men cannot attain higher perception (Satori) by various disciplines.
They shall be given salvation only through faith in Amitãbha. Renounce the spirit of
self-relying discipline, shut the gate of silent meditation and cultivation of virtues; ignore
all of the devices; throw away all knowledge; and concentrate on the one discipline of
invocation of the Buddha. Thus, Hōnen’s admonition to “renounce, shut, ignore, and
throw away” is one of the most famous assertion in the history of Japanese Buddhism.
Rejecting all the other doctrines, he chose the doctrine of Jōdo-nembutsu (The Choice of
Nembutsu as the Original Vow of the Buddha).
法然は次のように説いた。「もはや末法の時代にはいったのであるから、人々は
みずから修行することによっては、さとりを得ることができない。ただ浄土門によって
のみ救われる。自力修行の心を捨てよ、禅定修徳の門を閉じよ、いっさいの工夫を
さしおき、万事知慧を抛って、ただ称名念仏の一行に帰せよ。」これが法然の
「捨閉閣抛 (しゃへいかくほう)」として、日本仏教史のうえで有名な主張である。
かれは、ここにおいて他の諸教説を捨て去って、浄土念仏の教えのみを選びとったので
ある(「選択 (せんちゃく) 本願念仏」)。
In the direction of simplification, Shinran, too, went further than Hōnen. According to
him, invocation of the name of Amitãbha, that is, “Oh, save me, thou Amitãbha!”
(Namuamidabutsu), is the essence of and idol of the fundamental sūtra, the Larger
Sukhãvatìvyūha-sutra. To understand the words or sentences of this sutra, is not so
important. The consummation of faith consists in the invocation of Amitãbha. Hōnen
advocated that the name of Amitãbha should be repeated sixty thousand times a day,
but Shinran rejected this doctrine as meaningless.
単純化という方向においては、親鸞は法然を超えて、さらに進んでいる。親鸞に
よると、「南無阿弥陀仏」という仏の名号が、根本経典である『大無量寿経』の体で
あり、本尊である。かれにあっては、経典の字句のいちいちについての理解は、さほど
問題ではない。名号を唱えることに、信仰の極致が存する。法然の規定した日課七万遍
の念仏を、親鸞はもはや無意味な苦行として否定してしまった。
Although he inherited the terms of the pure and exclusive discipline, he changed the
meaning completely. “You should believe, with an exclusive, pure, and sincere heart, in
the Original Vow that we can go to be born in the Pure Land of Amitãbha if we say
‘Namuamidabutsu’ only once. This discipline can be called the pure and exclusive
discipline.” “The exclusive heart referred to in the Commentary (the Sangenji of Zendō) is
nothing but the single heart. It states that we should not have two hearts. The exclusive
discipline referred to is nothing but a single discipline. It expresses that we should not
have two disciplines.”
かれは一向専修ということばを受けつぎながら、その意味をすっかり改めてしまった。
『この念仏往生の願を一向に信じてふたごころなきを、一向専修とは申なり。』
『釈(=善導の著した『散善義』)に専心と云へるは、即ち一心なり。二心なきことを
形 (あら) はすなり。専念と云へるは、即ち一行なり。二行なきことを形はすなり。』
