In the first place, what is “Amida Buddha,” in which Shin Buddhism followers
take refuge?――more to come both in English and in Japanese.
Gautama Buddha’s life in this world came to an end when he was eighty years old.
Yet the teaching, or dharma, that he expounded represents a universal principle
that pervades the world, reaching all places and remaining valid in all periods of time.
Accordingly, both his teachings and his life are praised as being eternal. Spatially,
they extend out to guide all people without exception, and temporally, they approach
people and turn them toward an infinite future.
ゴータマ・ブッダは、80歳でこの世の生命を終えたけれども、彼が説いたところの
ダルマ、その教法というものは、いつの時代にも、いかなる場所にも通じる、世界を
貫く普遍の道理、真理である。したがって、彼の教法、彼の生命は、永遠であって、
空間的には、限りなく広がって人々を導き、また時間的にも、限りない未来に向かって
人々に働きかけていくと考えられ、そのように讃えられたわけであります。
This view of Gautama Buddha was adopted by lay householders. It slowly moved
in the direction from the historical to the abstract, wherein Gautama Buddha came
to be viewed more as a symbol of transcendence and eternity. Finally, it gave rise
to the idea of Amida Buddha as an autonomous buddha, one of immeasurable light
and immeasurable life that transcended even the human Gautama. These were the
historical circumstances that led to the formation of notion of Amida Buddha.
このような、在家信者によるゴータマ観は、やがてそのゴータマ・ブッダを、
だんだんと超越、永遠の方向に向かって抽象化し、象徴化していくことになり、
ついには、ゴータマという人格を超えたところの、光明無量、寿命無量なる、独立した
ブッダとしての、阿弥陀仏という思想が誕生してくることになったのです。これが
阿弥陀仏思想の歴史的な成立事情であります。
We might say that Amida Buddha arose within the sincerity of the hearts and minds of
people who praised and revered Gautama Buddha after his death. The notion of
Amida Buddha was formed through the process of gradual abstraction both of
Gautama’s life and of the inner reality of Gautama’s experience of awakening――
his enlightenment as a buddha――which he fulfilled at the risk of his own subjectivity.
This was symbolized as Amida Buddha, the Buddha of immeasurable light and life,
the Buddha possessed of infinite reach throughout space and unlimited connectivity
throughout all time.
すなわち、阿弥陀仏とは、ゴータマ・ブッダが亡くなった後、それを讃仰 (さんごう)
した人々の至純な心によって、そのゴータマの生命を、あるいはそのゴータマが自己の
主体をかけて成就したところの、仏としての「めざめ」、「さとり」体験の内実を、
次第に抽象化していくということの中で生まれたわけであります。そして光明無量、
寿命無量なる仏、空間的には、限りない広がりをもち、時間的には、限りない連なりを
もって働きかける仏、阿弥陀仏として、象徴化されていったわけであります。
