をした、鈴木大拙の名著で学びましょう。まずは、「禅とは何か? 」――バイリンガル

Zen is said to be the foundation of Japanese culture. Let’s learn Zen through the
masterpiece by Daisetz Suzuki, who made a great contribution to introducing Japanese
culture to the world. First, “What is Zen?” ――more to come both in English and in
Japanese.
Zen wants us to see directly into the spirit of Buddha. What is this spirit? What is that
which constitutes the essential teaching of Buddhism. This is Prajna and Karuna. Prajna
and Karuna are Sanskrit terms. Prajna may be translated “transcendental wisdom,” and
Karuna “love” or “compassion.”
禅は仏陀の精神を直接に見ようと欲するのである。この精神とはなんであるか。この
仏教の真髄を成すものとはなんであるか。これは般若(プラジュニャ: 智慧)と大悲
(カルーナ)である。般若は「超越的智慧」、大悲は「愛」または「憐情」と訳すことが
できよう。
Prajna makes us look into the reality of things beyond their phenomenality, and,
therefore, when Prajna is attained we have an insight into the fundamental significance
of life and of the world, and cease from worrying about merely individual interests and
sufferings.
般若によって、人は事物の現象的表現を超えてその実在を見得することができる。
それゆえに、般若をえれば、われわれは生と世界との根本的の意義を洞徹しえて、
たんなる個人的な利益や苦痛に思いわずらうことがなくなる。
Karuna is then free to work its own way, which means that love, unobstructed by its
selfish encumbrances, is able to spread itself over all things. In Buddhism it extends
even to inanimate beings, for Buddhism believes that all beings, regardless of the forms
they take in their present states of existence, are ultimately destined to attain
Buddhahood when love penetrates into them.
大悲がそのとき自在に作用する。それは「愛」がその利己的な妨げを受けずに、万物に
およぶことができるという意味である。仏教では、愛は無生物にまでおよぶ。いっさい
の存在は現在の生存状態のままで、いかなる形態をとろうとも、愛が彼らに浸透する
ときは、結局、成仏する定めになっていると信じられている。
