David R. Loy has mastered Japanese Zen Buddhism and been publishing provocative
books about the meanings of Buddhism in modern society. Having taught in a Japanese
university, he gives a candid advice on the Japan’s educational system――more to come

I taught in a Japanese university for many years and despite some fine colleagues, it
taught me to loathe Japan’s educational system. It’s better described as an examination
system, for that is the sole concern of the whole process.
私は長年、日本の大学で教鞭をとってきた。同僚にも恵まれたが、あの経験が私に日本
の教育制度に対する不快感を募らせた。日本の教育制度は、受験制度と言い換えた
ほうが良いだろう。なぜならば、この教育制度の過程において中心的な要となるのが
受験だからである。
The main thing students learn from it is to hate studying, which mostly involves
memorizing for multiple-choice questions; the exams do not usually include an essay,
which means that students do not need to bother learning how to write, which also
means that they do not learn how to think.
この制度から学生が学ぶことは、「勉強は嫌なもの」だということである。ここでいう
「勉強」とは、〇×方式テストの暗記を意味する。通常、日本の受験にはエッセイは
含まれておらず、学生は文章を書くということを学ぶ必要がない。これは物事を考える
ことを学ばないのと同じである。
By the time they get to university many of them are exhausted, if not functionally
brain-dead, and university is generally accepted as a time to relax and enjoy oneself,
rather than an opportunity to stretch and develop oneself in new ways. Academic
standards are quite low and it is difficult to flunk out, because that would reflect back
negatively on the university itself.
大学に入学する頃には、脳死とまで言わないが、多くの学生は疲れ果てている。
そして、一般的に学生にとって大学は自分自身を成長させるような機会の場ではなく、
リラックスして時間を楽しむ場として理解される。学術水準は極めて低く、退学する
ほうが難しいくらいだ。なぜならば、大学も学生も退学させれば、返って悪影響が
大学側に戻ってくるシステムになっているからである。
The consequences of this unfortunate system for millions of bright young people, and for
Japanese society as a whole, are tragic. Nevertheless, it would be easy to change. The
focus is entirely on university entrance exams, and each university sets its own.
何百万人もの輝かしい未来を持つ若者に対して、この不幸な制度がもたらす結果は、
日本社会全体としての悲劇である。それにも関わらず、この制度は簡単には改善
されない。重視されるのは専ら大学の入学試験であり、それぞれの大学で入学試験が
設けられている。
There is also a strict hierarchy accepted by everyone: Tokyo University is the most
prestigious, followed by Kyoto University, and so on in a recognized order. This means
that if a dozen of the best universities reformed their admissions policies, other
universities would soon feel compelled to follow their example, and Japan’s whole
educational system would re-structure to meet the new criteria.
また、日本の大学には万人に受容された厳しい階級制度も存在する。それは、東京大学
を頂点とし、次に慶應大学等の名門私立大学が並ぶ(誤訳?→それに京都大学が続く)大学
ランキングのことである。これは、もし十数校の名門大学が入試制度を改革すると、
すぐに他の諸大学も止むを得ず名門大学に従わなければならないと感じ、日本全体の
教育制度は新たな基準に適合するように再構築されるということである。
Why hasn’t this happened? Despite a few gestures in that direction, the politicians and
bureaucrats who supervise this system are more or less comfortable with it, and juku
cram schools find it quite profitable. While some grumble, the basic problem with
changing it is that most people now take it for granted.
しかし、なぜ未だに再構築されていないのであろうか。それは大学は教育制度改革への
意思表示はあるものの、この制度を監督する政治家や官僚は多かれ少なかれ現状に満足
し、塾や予備校といわれるものは非常に儲かるビジネスとなっているからである。不平
もある一方で、この教育制度の変革に伴う基本的な問題は、大抵の人々が既存の
教育制度を当然だと思っていることにあるのだ。
