Zen is said to be the foundation of Japanese culture. Let’s learn Zen through the
masterpiece by Daisetz Suzuki, who made a great contribution to introducing Japanese
culture to the world. He gives us commentaries, in terms of Zen, on the “philosophy of
death” which is peculiar to Japan――more to come both in English and in Japanese.
Zen did not necessarily argue with them about immortality of soul, or about
righteousness of the divine way, or about ethical conduct, but it simply urged to go ahead
with whatever conclusion rational or irrational a man has arrived at.
禅はかならずしも霊魂の不滅や神の道の義しさや倫理的行為については彼ら(武士
修禅者)と議論をしなかったが、ただ合理・非合理いかなる結論にもせよ、人がそれに
達したものをもって突進することを説いた。
Philosophy may safely be left with intellectual minds; Zen wants to act, and the most
effective act is, once the mind is made up, to go on without looking backward. In this
respect, Zen is indeed the religion of the samurai warrior.
哲学は知的精神の所有者によって安全に保存せられてよい。禅は行動することを
欲する。最も有効な行動は、ひとたび決心した以上、振りかえらずに進むことである。
この点において禅はじつに武士の宗教である。
“To die isagi-yoku” is one of the thoughts very dear to the Japanese heart. In some
deaths, if this characteristic is present, crimes committed by the offenders are judged
even charitably. Isagi-yoku means “leaving no regrets,” “ with a clear conscience,” “like
a brave man,” “with no reluctance,” “in full possession of mind,” and so on.
「潔く死ぬ」ということは、日本人の心に最も親しい思想の一つである。死にようには
さまざまあることだが、この特性が存するときは罪人の犯した罪さえ寛大に裁かれる
傾きがある。「潔く」は「悔いを残さずに」「明らかな良心をもって」「勇士らしく」
「ためらうことなく」「落着払って」などの意味である。
The Japanese hate to see a death irresolutely and lingeringly met with, they desire to be
blown away like the cherries before the wind, and no doubt this Japanese attitude
towards death must have gone very well with the teaching of Zen.
日本人は思い切りわるくぐずぐずして死を迎えるのを嫌う。風に吹かれる桜のように
散り逝くことを欲する。たしかに日本人のこの死に対する態度は禅の教えと一致したに
違いない。
The Japanese may not have any specific philosophy of life, but they have decidedly one
of death which may sometimes appear to be that of recklessness. The spirit of the
samurai deeply breathing Zen into itself propagated its philosophy even among the
masses.
日本人は別段、生の哲学は持たないかもしれぬが、たしかに死の哲学は持っている。
時とするとそれは一見、向う見ずの哲学であるようにも思われよう。禅を深く吸込んで
いる武士の精神はその哲学をまた庶民の間まで拡げた。
The latter, even when they are not particularly trained in the way of the warrior, have
imbibed his spirit and are ready to sacrifice their lives for any cause they think worthy.
This has repeatedly been proved in the wars Japan has so far had to go through for one
reason or another. A foreign writer on Japanese Buddhism aptly remark that Zen is the
Japanese character.
庶民は自分たちがとくに武士の仕方で鍛錬されていないときでもその精神を吸込んで
いて、正しいと考えるいかなる理由のためにも、自分の命を犠牲にする覚悟をして
いる。これは従来、日本がなにかの理由で飛込まねばならなかった諸戦争で、しばしば
証明せられてきたことである。日本の仏教に関して書いている外国の一記者は、禅は
日本的性格だと適切な言を吐いている。(註、サー・チャーレス・エリオット大使著
