Zen is said to be the foundation of Japanese culture. Let’s learn Zen through the
masterpiece by Daisetz Suzuki, who made a great contribution to introducing Japanese
culture to the world. He gives us commentaries on the divinity of a Japanese
sword――more to come both in English and in Japanese.
It is noteworthy that the swordsmith invoked when making swords the aid of a guardian
god. To invite him to the workshop, the smith surrounds it with consecrated ropes, thus
excluding the intrusion of evil spirits, while the smith himself goes through the ceremony
of absolution and dons the ceremonial dress in which he works. While striking the
iron-bar and giving it fiery and watery baths the smith and his helper are in the most
intensified state of mind.
刀鍛冶が刀を作るときに、守り神の助けを祈るということは注目するにたる。神を
鍛冶場に招くために、鍛冶匠はそこに注連縄(しめなわ)を張りめぐらして悪魔の侵入を
排し、自分は祓(はらい)の式を行ない、礼服を着用して、仕事をする。鉄棒を打って
それを火に入れ水に入れる間、鍛冶匠とその助手は最も集注した心理状態に入るので
ある。
Confident in the help of the god which will be given in their work, they exert themselves
to the limits of their power, mental, physical and spiritual. The sword thus produced is
really a work of art and must reflect something of the spirit of the artist. This is probably
the reason why there is something in the Japanese sword deeply appealing to the soul of
the people. They look at it indeed not as a weapon of destruction but as an object of
inspiration.
彼らの仕事に神助が与えられることをかたく信じ、彼らは智力・体力・精神力のかぎり
をつくして努める。かくして製作された刀は真に芸術品であって、作家の精神を
なにかしら反映するに違いない。おそらくこういう理由で、日本刀には、人々の魂に
深く喰入るものがあるのであろう。彼らはまことにそれを、破壊の武器としてでは
なく、霊感の対象として見るのである。
As something of divinity enters into making of the sword, its owner and user ought also
to respond to the inspiration. He ought to be a spiritual man, and not an agent of
brutality. His mind ought to be in unison with the soul which animates the cold surface of
the steel. The great swordsmen have never been tired of instilling this feeling into the
minds of their pupils.
刀剣の製作には、神徳の幾分かが加わるから、持主と使い手は、当然、かかる霊感に
呼応せねばならぬ。日本刀を帯するものは、精神的な人間たるべくして、獣性の代表者
たるべきではない。彼の心は、鋼鉄の冷たさを表面に表わしながら、そのなかに生ける
魂を蔵するものとしなければならぬ。すぐれた剣士はこの感情を弟子の心に吹込んで、
倦むところを知らぬ。
When the Japanese say that the sword is the soul of the samurai, we must remember all
that goes with it as I have tried to describe above, that is: loyalty, self-sacrifice,
reverence, benevolence, and the cultivation of religious feelings. Here is the true

日本刀が「刀は武士の魂だ」という時、自分が右に述べようとした一切のこと、
すなわち、忠・自己犠牲・尊敬・恩愛および宗教的感情の涵養などがこれに伴うという
ことを記憶しなければならぬ。ここに真の武士が存する。
