“The Awakening of Japan (1904)” is the historical masterpiece in which, Okakura
Tenshin, the author and one of the Japan’s greatest masters of English, successfully
conveyed true Japan to the world. He gives us commentaries on the true meanings of
the advent of the West for the Eastern people――more to come both in English and in
Japanese.
The picture of Western glory unfortunately has a reverse. Size alone does not constitute
true greatness, and the enjoyment of luxury does not always result in refinement. The
individuals who go to the making up of the great machine of so-called modern civilization
become the slaves of mechanical habit and are ruthlessly dominated by the monster
they have created. In spite of the vaunted freedom of the West, true individuality is
destroyed in the competition for wealth, and happiness and contentment are sacrificed to
an incessant craving for more.
西洋の燦然たる美しさの絵のような記事には、不幸にしてその裏面がある。大きさのみ
では真の偉大さをなさない。贅を尽くすこと必ずしも高尚にはならない。いわゆる
現代文明の大機構の組織に加わる個人は、機械的習慣の奴隷となり、みずから
作り出したこの怪物に無情にも制馭（せいぎょ）されている。西洋は自由ということを
高言しているにもかかわらず、富を得んと競って真の個性は害（そこな）われ、絶えず
募りゆく渇望に幸福と満足は犠牲にせられている。
The West takes pride in its emancipation from medieval superstition, but what of that
idolatrous worship of wealth that has taken its place? What sufferings and discontent lie
hidden behind the gorgeous mask of the present? The voice of socialism is a wail over
the agonies of Western economics, ――the tragedy of Capital and Labor. But with
a hunger unsatisfied by its myriad victims in its own broad lands, the West also seeks to
prey upon the East.
西洋は中世の迷信から解放せられたことを誇っているが、これに代った富の偶像的崇拝
を何と見るか。現代の絢爛（けんらん）たる仮面の背後には、何という苦悩と不満が
隠されていることであろう。社会主義の声は「資本」と「労働」の悲惨事である西洋
経済組織の苦悩に対する号泣である。広漠たる己が国土で無数の犠牲者を出しても
満たされない飢渇をもって、西洋は、東洋までも餌食にしようとしている。
The advance of Europe in Asia means not merely the imposition of social ideals which
the East holds to be crude if not barbarous, but also the subversion of all existing law
and authority. The Western ships which brought their civilization also brought conquests,
protectrorates, ex-territorial jurisdiction, spheres of influence, and what not of
debasement, till the name of the Oriental has become a synonym for the degenerate,
and the word “native” an epithet for slaves.
ヨーロッパのアジア進出は、単に東洋から見れば、野蛮でないとしても未熟と思われる
社会理想を強いるばかりでなく、すべて現存の法律や権威を破壊することになる。西洋
の文明をもたらした船舶はまた、征服、保護領、治外法権、勢力範囲、その他いろいろ
の低下の数々をもたらして、ついには東洋人の名は退化の同意語となり、「土着の」と
いう語は奴隷の形容辞となった。
In Japan the race of those fiery patriots who fifty years ago shouted, “Away with the
Western barbarians!” with all the lusty enthusiasm of the Chinese Boxers, is entirely
gone. The tremendous change which has since come over our political life, and the
material advantages we have gained by foreign contact, have so completely
revolutionized national sentiment in regard to the West that it has become almost
impossible for us to conceive what it was that so aroused the antagonism of our
grandfathers.
日本においては、50年前、支那拳匪（けんぴ）のようなさかんな熱狂をもって「西夷を
攘（はら）え」と叫んだ熱烈な愛国者たちは今や全く亡（な）し、爾来わが国の政治
生活の上に起った驚天動地の大変化と我々が外国との接触によって得た利益とに
よって、西洋に関する国民の感情は全く大変革を来して、祖父たちが何のために敵愾心
を起したかを想像するに苦しむに至った。
On the contrary, we have become so eager to identify ourselves with European
civilization instead of Asiatic that our continental neighbors regard us as
renegades――nay, even as an embodiment of the White Disaster itself. But our mental
standpoint of a few generations back was that of the conservative Chinese patriot of
today, and we saw in Western advance but the probable encompassing of our ruin.
一方、我々はアジア文明の代りにヨーロッパ文明と相提携せんとする熱心のあまり、
大陸の隣邦は、我々を変節者、否「白禍」の権化とまで見なすに至った。しかし、
数代前の日本人の見解は、今日の支那の保守的愛国者の見解であった。そして西洋の
進出を見て、ただ恐らく日本の破滅が来るであろうと考えた。
If Asia was old-fashioned, was Europe just? If China tried to lift her head, if the worm
turned in its agony, did not Europe at once raise the cry of the Yellow Peril? Verily, the
glory of the West is the humiliation of Asia.
もしアジアが時代おくれであったとしても、ヨーロッパは公明正大であったろうか。
支那がその頭をもたげようとし、身悶えして一寸の虫にも五分の魂あることを見せよう
とすれば、ヨーロッパは直ちに黄禍の叫びをあげたではないか。げにヨーロッパの栄光
はアジアの屈辱である。
