「アフター・コロナ（コロナ以後）」と言われるほど、今までの価値観の変革を
求められる今。何か知性を超えたものを信じたい気持ちを、多くの人が抱いている
のではないでしょうか？「近代神学の父」と呼ばれるフリードリヒ・シュライアマハー
が、「不死」について語りながら、宇宙と私たちの関係について解説――バイリンガル
で、どうぞ (日本語版はドイツ語初版からの翻訳なので、英語版との間に多少の違いが
あることをご了承下さい)。
Now is the time even entitled “After Corona,” which is asking for the transformation of
our past values. Many people might feel pulled toward a belief in something beyond
intellect. Friedrich Schleiermacher, who is called “Father of Modern Liberal Theology,”
gives us commentaries on the relationship between the universe and us, while talking
about “immortality” ――more to come both in English and in Japanese (I hope you will
understand that there are some differences between the English version and the
Japanese one because the Japanese one is translated from the first German edition).
But concerning immortality, I cannot conceal that the way in which most people take it
and their longing after it is completely irreligious, exactly contrary to the spirit of religion.
Their wish has no other basis than their aversion to that which is the goal of religion.
不死ということについてはどうでしょうか。私は、多くの人々がそれを理解する方法、
それに対する憧れが、まったく反宗教的で、宗教の精神にまったく反している
ということを隠しておくことはできないのです。彼らの願いは、宗教の目指している
ものへの嫌悪という以外には何の根拠もないことなのです。
Recall how in religion everything strives to expand the sharply delineated outlines of our
personality and gradually to lose them in the infinite in order that we, by intuiting the
universe, will become one with it as much as possible. But they resist the infinite and do
not wish to get beyond themselves; they wish to be nothing other than themselves and
they are anxiously concerned about their individuality.
みなさんに思い起こしていただきたいことは、宗教において目標として努力されていた
ものは、いかにして鋭い線で明瞭に輪郭付けられた人格が拡大して行き、次第に無限な
ものの中に埋没し、宇宙の直観によって、私たちがいかにして宇宙とひとつになれる
か、ということであった、ということです。しかし多くの人々は、無限なものに反抗
し、自己を超越しようともせず、自己自身以外の何者にもなろうとはせず、不安のうち
に、自らの個性に配慮するばかりなのです。
Recall how it was the highest goal of religion to discover a universe beyond and above
humanity, and its only complaint was that this goal would not properly succeed in this
world.
みなさんに思い出していただきたいことは、宗教の最高目的は人間性の彼岸で、人間性
を超えたところで、宇宙をいかにして見出すかということなのです。そしてその目的の
実現は、この世界では正しくなされ得ないというところに、ただひとつの嘆きがある
ことをみなさんは思い出していただきたいのです。
But they do not want to seize the sole opportunity death affords them to transcend
humanity; they are anxious about how they will take it with them beyond this world, and
their highest endeavor is for further sight and better limbs.
しかし私に不死について語らせようとする者たちは、人間性を超越するために、死が
彼らに働きかける唯一の機会を一度も捉えようとしたことはない人たちだと思うの
です。彼らは、いかにして、人間性をこの世界の彼岸にまで持って行けるのかと心配
し、その視野を最大に広げようと努力し、また身体を丈夫にしようと努力しているに
過ぎないのです。
But the universe speaks to them, as it stands written: “Whoever loses his life for my sake,
will find it, and whoever would save it will lose it.” The life they would keep is lamentable,
for if it is the eternity of their person that concerns them, why do they not attend just
anxious to what they have been as to what they will be?
しかし宇宙は彼らに対してこう語るのです。「わたしのためにその生命を失うものは
これを得、これを得ようとするものはこれを失う。」彼らが得ようと願った生命は
哀れなものです。というのも、もし人格の永遠性ということが問題であるならば、彼ら
が将来何になるのか、ということと同じように、彼らが現在このようになっている
ということに心を配らないのはおかしなことではないでしょうか。
How does going forward help them if they cannot go backward? In search of
an immortality, which is none, and over which they are not masters, they lose the
immortality that they could have, and in addition their mortal life with thoughts that
vainly distress and torment them.
後ろに向かうことができないのに、前に向かうことがどんな意味を持っているというの
でしょうか。存在することもないし、またそれを支配することもできない不死への欲求
のために、彼らは持ち得たはずのものさえ失い、彼らが空しくも恐れたり、悩んだり
する思いのためにこの世の生も失ってしまうのです。
But try to yield up your life out of love for the universe. Strive here already to annihilate
your individuality and to live in the one and all; strive to be more than yourselves so that
you lose little if you lose yourselves; and if you have fused with as much of the universe
as you find here and a greater and holier longing has arisen in you, then we will want to
speak further about the hopes death gives to us and concerning the infinity to which we
unerringly soar through it
それにもかかわらず、宇宙への愛の故に、みなさんの生命を捨ててみていただきたいの
です。なおここにあるみなさんの個性を捨てて、一であり全てであるものの中に
生きようと試みていただきたいのです。みなさんが自らを失う時に、みなさんが失う
ものが少なくなるように、みなさん自身が今ある以上のものになるように努力して
いただきたいのです。そしてそこでみなさんは、みなさんが見出した宇宙と融合するの
です。そしてみなさんの中に、より大きな、より聖なる憧れが生じてきたなら、希望に
ついての話をさらに先に進めて行きましょう。つまり、死が私たちに与える希望に
ついて、そして死によって私たちが間違いなくそこへとたどり着く不死についての話を
先に進めて行きましょう。
That is my sentiment concerning these matters. God is not everything in religion, but
one, and the universe is more; furthermore, you cannot believe in him by force of will or
because you want to use him for solace and help, but because you must.
これがこれらの問題についての私の考えです。神は宗教における全てではなく、宗教の
ひとつの問題なのです。そして宇宙はそれ以上のものなのです。みなさんは、思いの
ままに気軽に信じることはできないですし、みなさんは神を慰めや助けに利用するため
にだけ信じるのではなく、神はただ信じなければならないから信じるのです。
Immortality may not be a wish unless it has first been a task you have carried out. To be
one with the infinite in the midst of the finite and to be eternal in a moment, that is the
immortality of religion.
不死は、もしそれがみなさんが第一に解決すべき課題でないのであれば、それを願う
必要はないのです。有限なものの真ん中で、無限なものとひとつとなり、その瞬間に
おいて永遠となること、これが宗教のいう不死性なのです。
