前提条件の残り２つ。「自由からの逃走」など数々の名著で知られる心理学者
エーリッヒ・フロムの解説に耳を傾けてみましょう――バイリンガルで、どうぞ。
Following “discipline” and “concentration,” there are two prerequisites left for honing the
art of loving. Let’s listen to the commentaries of Erich Fromm who is a psychologist
well-known for his masterpieces such as “Escape from Freedom.”――more to come both
in English and in Japanese.
A third factor is patience. Again, anyone who ever tried to master an art knows that
patience is necessary if you want to achieve anything. If one is after quick results, one
never learns an art.
第三は、忍耐である。何かを達成するために忍耐が必要だということは、やはり、一度
でも何かの技術を習得しようとしたことのある人なら知っているはずだ。性急に結果を
求める人は絶対に技術を身につけることはできない。
Yet, for modern man, patience is as difficult to practice as discipline and concentration.
Our whole industrial system fosters exactly the opposite: quickness. All our machines are
designed for quickness: the car and airplane bring us quickly to our destination――and
the quicker the better. The machine which can produce the same quantity in half the time
is twice as good as the older and slower one. Of course, there are important economic
reasons for this.
しかし現代人にとって、忍耐は、規律や集中力と同じくらい、体得するのが
むずかしい。現代の産業システム全体が、忍耐とは正反対のもの、すなわち速さを
求めているからだ。すべの機械は速さを最優先して設計されている。自動車や飛行機
は、私たちをすばやく目的地まで連れて行ってくれる。しかも、速ければ速いほど
よいとみなされる。同じ量の製品を半分の時間で生産できる機械は、古くて遅い機械
よりも二倍よいとされる。もちろんこれには重要な経済的理由がある。
But, as in so many other aspects, human values have become determined by economic
values. What is good for machines must be good for man――so goes the logic.
しかし問題は、他の多くの面と同じく、人間の価値もまたますます経済的価値によって
決定されるようになっているということだ。機械にとってよいことは人間にとっても
よいはずだ、という理屈だ。
Modern man thinks he loses something――time――when he does not do things quickly;
yet he does not know what to do with the time he gains――except kill it.
現代人は、なんでもすばやくやらないと、何かを――時間を――無駄にしているような
気になる。ところが、そうやって稼いだ時間で何をしたらよいかわからず、ただ暇を
つぶすことしかできない。
Eventually, a condition of learning any art is a supreme concern with the mastery of the
art. If the art is not something of supreme importance, the apprentice will never learn it.
He will remain, at best, a good dilettante, but will never become a master.
最後にもうひとつ、技術の習得に最大限の関心を抱くことも、技術を身につけるための
必要条件のひとつである。もし自分にとってもっとも重要なものでないとしたら、技術
を身につけようとしても、絶対に身につかないだろう。せいぜい良質の趣味人
（ディレッタント）になれるくらいで、達人にはなれない。
This condition is as necessary for the art of loving as for any other art. It seems, though,
as if the proportion between masters and dilettante is more heavily weighted in favor of
the dilettante in the art of loving than is the case with other arts.
この条件は、他の技術と同じく、愛の技術にとっても必要だが、愛の技術においては、
達人と趣味人とを比べてみると、他の技術の場合よりも趣味人の比率が高いように
思われる。
