科学の発達で、人は宗教の言うことが信じられなくなり、不幸になった、というのは、
実は、大きな誤解。最新の科学、とくに量子力学が描く宇宙は、宗教とくに仏教が説く
宇宙に驚くほど近づいています。現代人の不安と不幸の主な原因は、「経済機構の
発達」にあると言うのです。20世紀を代表する心理学者のひとりエーリッヒ・フロムの
言葉に耳を傾けてみましょう――バイリンガルで、どうぞ。
That development of science has made people doubt what religion says and become
unhappy is actually a great misunderstanding. What the latest science, especially
quantum mechanics, describes the universe comes surprisingly close to the universe
taught by religions, especially Buddhism. The main cause of anxiety and unhappiness of
modern man is said to lie in “development of economic machine.” Let’s listen to Erich
Fromm, one of the representative psychologists in the 20 th century―― more to come
both in English and in Japanese.
The attitude common to the teachings of the founders of all great Eastern and Western
religions is one in which the supreme aim of living is a concern with man’s soul and the
unfolding of his power of love and reason. Psychoanalysis, far from being a threat to this
aim, can on the contrary contribute a great deal to its realization.
東西両洋にわたって、すべての大宗教の教祖たちの教説に共通の態度は、生きることの
最高目的が、人間の魂への関心にあり、また人間のもっている愛と理性との力を展開
することにある、という点において一致している。精神分析はこの目的をおびやかす
どころか、かえってその実現に多くの貢献をなしうるのである。
Nor can this aspect be threatened by any other science. It is not conceivable that any
discovery made by the natural sciences could become a threat to religious feeling. On
the contrary, an increased awareness of the nature of the universe in which we live can
only help man to become more self-reliant and more humble.
また宗教のこのような面は、他のどんな科学によっても決しておびやかされることは
ない。自然科学によってなされるどんな発見でも、それが宗教的感情にとって脅威
となるというようなことは考えられない。逆に、われわれの生きている宇宙の性質に
ついての認識が増大して行くことは、かえって、人間がもっと自信をもち、そして
もっと謙遜になるための助けとなるばかりである。
As for the social sciences, their growing understanding of man’s nature and the laws of
governing his existence contributes to the development of a religious attitude rather
than threatens it.
また社会科学といえば、人間の性質や人間の存在を支配する諸法則などに関するその
理解がどんどん成長して行けば、それは宗教的態度をおびやかすというよりむしろ、
その発展に貢献することになるのである。
The threat to the religious attitude lies not in science but in the predominant practices of
daily life. Here man has ceased to seek in himself the supreme purpose of living and has
made himself an instrument serving the economic machine his own hands have built.
宗教的態度をおびやかすものは科学のうちにあるのではなく、日常生活を支配している
慣習のうちにあるのである。ここでは、人は生きることの至高の目的を自分自身のうち
に求めることをやめてしまい、自分自身を、そのみずからの手で造った経済機構
(economic machine) に仕える道具としてしまったのである。
He is concerned with efficiency and success rather than with his happiness and the
growth of his soul. More specifically the orientation which most endangers the religious
attitude is what I have called the “marketing orientation” of modern man.
人間は、自己の幸福と魂の成長よりは、能率と成功とに関心を向けている。もっと明確
にいえば、宗教的態度をもっとも危険に曝すものは、わたしが現代人の「市場的構え」
(marketing orientation) と呼んだところの構えなのである。
The marketing orientation has established its dominant role as a character pattern only in
the modern era. In the personality market all professions, occupations, and statuses
appear. Employer, employee, and free-lance――each must depend for material success
on personal acceptance by those who would use his services.
市場的構えは現代に特有の性格様式として支配的な役割をうちたてた。パースナリティ
市場 (personality market) のうちには、あらゆる種類の職業や業務や地位などが出現
する。雇主、雇人、自由労働者――これらそれぞれの物質的成功というものは、自分の
奉仕する人々のひいきを得るということに依存しているのである。
It is hardly surprising that under these circumstances man’s sense of his value must suffer
severely. The conditions for his self-esteem are beyond his control. He is dependent on
others for approval and in constant need of it; helplessness and insecurity are the
inevitable results. Man loses his own identity in the marketing orientation; he becomes
alienated from himself.
このような環境のもとにあっては、自分自身についての価値観がひどく害されてしまう
ことも当然である。かれの自己評価の条件は、かれ自身ではどうすることもできない
ものである。かれは賛意をうるために他の人々に依存し、そして絶えずそれを必要と
する。したがって必然的に、頼り無さと不安定とが招来されることになる。市場的構え
においては、人は自己同一性を失い、自己自身から疎外されてしまうにいたるので
ある。
If man’s highest value is success, if love, truth, justice, tenderness, mercy are of no use to
him, he may profess these ideals but he does not strive for them. He may think that he
worships the god of love but he actually worships an idol which is the idealization of his
real goals, those rooted in the marketing orientation.
もし人間の最高価値が成功にあり、愛、真理、正義、柔和、慈悲、といったことがかれ
にとってなんの役にもたたないことであるのならば、かれはこれらの理想を「口に
する」ではあろうが、決してこれを追求しはすまい。かれは愛なる神を礼拝していると
考えるかもしれないが、しかし実際には、市場的構えに基づく、現実の目的を理想化
した偶像を拝んでいるのである。
