西洋人と仏教の話をすると、しばしば「禅」について質問されます。日本人を、
「禅の達人」のように考えている西洋人は、多いようです。今回から、西洋への禅の
伝道師・鈴木大拙と20世紀を代表する心理学者のひとりエーリッヒ・フロムが共著
した、非常に興味深い名著を紹介します――バイリンガルで、どうぞ。
When you have a conversation with a Westerner, in terms of Buddhism, you will be
frequently asked about “Zen.” It seems that many Westerners regard the Japanese.as
”Zen master.” From this time in my weblog, I introduce a greatly interesting masterpiece,
co-written by Daisetz Suzuki, a Zen evangelist to the West, and Erich Fromm, one of the
representative psychologists in the 20 th century―― more to come both in English and
in Japanese.
I am a Zen-man and my approach is “antescientific” ―or even “antiscientific” sometimes,
I am afraid. “Antescientific” may not be an appropriate term, but it seems to express what
I wish to mean. “Metascientific” may not be bad, either, for the Zen position develops
after science or intellectualization has occupied for some time the whole field of human
study, and Zen demands that before we give ourselves up unconditionally to the
scientific way over the whole field of human activities we stop and reflect within
ourselves and see if things are all right as they are.
私は禅者で、私のやり方は前科学的なのです。ときにはこれが非科学的となる場合も
あるかも知れないが、私には自分の言いたいところがこれで表わされているように
思う。後科学的というのも悪くないようだ。なるほど或る時期の間は科学もしくは
概念的思考が人間研究の全領域を占めることがあろうが、しかし禅の立場はそれから
以後に展開するものである。言い換えれば、ありとあらゆる人間活動の全領域における
科学力の支配に我々が無条件で我々の身を委ねてしまう前に、「ちょっと待て」と禅は
言う。「もう一度お前自身を見直してみよ、物ごとは本来そのままで、それで
いいのだ、ということがわからないのか」と。
The Zen approach is to enter right into the object itself and see it, as it were, from the
inside. To know the flower is to become the flower, to be the flower, to bloom as the
flower, and to enjoy the sunlight as well as the rainfall.
禅的な方法とはじかに対象そのものの中にはいって行くのである。そして実際
そのものの中からモノを見るのだ。花を知るには花になるのだ。一片の花と
なりきって、花となって花を開き、花となって太陽の光を浴び、花となって雨に
打ち濡れるのだ。
When this is done, the flower speaks to me and I know all its secrets, all its joys, all its
sufferings; that is, all its life vibrating within itself. Not only that: along with my
“knowledge” of the flower I know all the secrets of the universe, which includes all the
secrets of my own Self, which has been eluding my pursuit all my life so far, because I
divided myself into a duality, the pursuer and the pursued, the object and the shadow.
No wonder that I never succeeded in catching my Self, and how exhausting this game
was!
これが出来て初めて、花が私に語りかけてくる。私は花のいっさいの神秘を知る。花の
いっさいのよろこびと苦しみを知る。すなわち花の中に脈打つ花のいのちのいっさいを
知るのだ。いやそればかりではない。花を知り得たこの「知」によって全宇宙の神秘を
知るのである。この神秘は実は私自身の「自己(セルフ)」の神秘でもあるのだ。この
自己の神秘こそかつての私は私の全生涯をかけてこれを追究したにもかかわらず
どうしてもつかまえることの出来なかったものなのだ。どうしてだったかと言うと、
私自身が追っかける私と追っかけられる私、つまり、モノと影との二つに分かれていた
からである。こういう鬼ゴッコをしていたのではいつまでたっても私の自己が
とらえられなかったのも無理のない話なのだ。どうもこの鬼ゴッコには実は私も
力つきてクタクタになってしまった。
Now, however, by knowing the flower I know my Self. That is, by losing myself in the
flower I know my Self as well as the flower.
がしかし、一たび花を知った私は、同時に自己を知ることが出来た。つまり、花の
まっただなかに自己を喪失して、初めて私は自己を知り同時に花を知ったのである。
The sciences deal with abstractions and there is no activity in them. Zen plunges itself
into the source of creativity and drinks from it all the life there is in it. This source is Zen’s
Unconscious. The flower, however, is unconscious of itself. It is I who awaken it from the
unconscious.
科学者は抽象を用いるのだが、抽象というものにはみずから発する力というものが
ない。しかるに禅はみずから創造の源泉の中に飛び込んで、その源泉の生命を、源泉
そのものを飲みつくしてしまうのだ。この源泉を禅の「無意識」と言う。だが花は自分
で自分を意識することはない。この花を花の無意識からめざめさすものはいったい
何か。これが「私」というものである。
