数多くの日本人に対する心理療法において、河合隼雄が発見したこと。それは、「母」
の影響の強さ――バイリンガルで、どうぞ。
What Hayao Kawai has found in his psychotherapy of many Japanese people: “Mother”
affects so strongly――more to come both in English and in Japanese.
As I began my practice, I was impressed by how strong the Mother archetype was. In the
background of every interpersonal relationship, there was the powerful functioning of
the Mother archetype. There was no exception to this in the client-therapist relationship.
最初に、日本において心理療法を行ってゆく上で、まず痛感させられたのは、母元型の
強さ、ということでありました。日本におけるあらゆる人間関係の背後に、母元型の力
がはたらいており、それは治療者とクライアントの間においても、例外ではありません
でした。
The dominance of the Mother archetype, especially in regard to Buddhism, manifested
itself beautifully in the well-known dream of Shinran Shonin (1173-1262), who developed
the new Shin (Truth) sect of Pure Land Buddhism, which even today has numerous
devotees.
日本における母元型の優位は、仏教との関連で言えば、日本で浄土真宗という新しい
仏教の派を興し、今も多くの信者を持つ、親鸞 (1173-1262) の有名な夢の体験に、
それは端的に示されています。
In Buddhism, there has always been a strict rule prohibiting monks from having intimate
relations with women. In Japan, however, this prohibition was constantly broken. “He
who hides it is a sage; he who abstains is a Buddha,” was an old quotation. In Shinran’s
time, someone who had written, “Nowadays, the sages who hide it are few; the Biddha
who abstains is rarer still.” Such was the state of things at that time.
仏教においては僧が女性と関係をもつのを禁じる戒が厳しく設定されています。
しかし、日本ではその戒が容易に破られ、当時の書物には「隠すは上人、せぬは仏」
という言葉があるが「今の世には、かくす上人猶すくなく、せぬ仏いよいよ希
なりけり」と書かれているほどの状態でありました。
In such a state, Shinran, seemingly alone, suffered from the dilemma that , while he
should be keeping the religious precepts, he could not control his desire for women.
When he was about thirty years old, tormented by his own sexual urges, he undertook
a one-hundred-day retreat to get dream oracles to resolve his dilemma. At dawn on the
ninety-fifth day, he had a dream in which the figure of Kannon, the Bodhisattva of
Compassion, who was enshrined in that temple, appeared and spoke to him:
親鸞はそのような状況のなかで、ただ一人、戒は守るべきだとは思うものの、女性に
対する自分の欲求をおさえることも出来ず、強い葛藤に悩んでいました。かれは三十歳
の頃、この葛藤の解決のための夢告を得ようとして、百日の参籠をし、九十五日目に次
のような夢を見ました。
When the devotee finds himself bound, through the working out of his past karma, to
come into (sexual) contact with the female sex, I will incarnate myself as a beautiful
woman and become the object of his love. Throughout his life, I will be his helpmate for
the sake of embellishing this world: and on his deathbed, I will lead him to Amida’s Land
of Bliss.
Through these words the Bodhisattva Kannon declared his Vow. He designated that I
should make this known to all.
お堂に祀られている救世観音大菩薩が夢にあらわれ、
行者宿報にて設 (たと) ひ女犯すとも
我れ玉女の身と成りて犯せられむ
一生の間、能く荘厳して
臨終に引導して極楽に生ぜしむ
と言い、このことを「一切群生に説き聞かすへし」と告命された。
In this dream, the Bodhisattva said to Shinran, suffering so from the conflict between his
monastic vow of celibacy and his need to express his sexual nature, that He, Kannon,
would become a woman, to fulfill Shinran’s desires, and He would guide the devotee to
Paradise at the time of death. Here is the Mother archetype, clear and simple. In general,
Japanese clients project such a Bodhisattva figure onto the therapist. And the therapist
also, consciously or not, try to play the Bodhisattva role.
この夢は、性の問題に悩む親鸞に対して、救世観音が、自分自身が女性となり犯される
側になって、臨終の際には極楽に導いてやろう、と言われたのだから、大変な母性原理
の強調であります。一般に、日本のクライアントはどこかでこのような救世観音の姿を
治療者に投影してくる、と言ってもいい。そして、治療者の方も意識的、無意識的に
救世観音の役割を演じようとするのです。
