Life is hard. No matter how fortunate one’s situation may seem, life presents
all sort of difficulties. No one can escape them. A person may be financially well off
have health problems. Or one may have good health but family problems
and conflicts with relatives. There are also the more abstract difficulties we encounter
in seeking love and trying to fulfill our personal aspirations. There are the difficulties of
mental suffering and insecurity, and of frustrated desires.
毎日の暮らしの中で、私がいつも思うのは、何百年も前の、三人の宗教者のことです。
まず、法然。そして、親鸞。最後が、蓮如。(日本語版のみの記述)
生きて、生活していくということは大変なことではあります。私の郷里の老人たちは、
「難儀なことで」と、よく言いました。どんなに恵まれた立場の人でも、生きていくと
いうことは、それぞれに難儀なことです。それから逃れることなど、できません。
経済的に余裕のある人でも、健康まで思うとおりにはできない。いくら健康でも、家庭
の問題や肉親との対立は避けるわけにはいかないでしょう。愛情や希望へのこだわりと
いった目に見えない難儀もあります。精神的な苦しみや不安、また、満たされない欲望
といった難儀もあります。
Life is hard. It’s only natural to sometimes feel that one can’t go on living.
When I feel that way, the words and deeds of Honen (1133-1212), Shinran (1173-1263),
and Rennyo (1415-1499) are a great aid. To put it simply, these three religious leaders
give me the strength to live this difficult life, to go on without giving up. I feel an aura
surrounding these men that prevents me from falling into the pit of depression
in this life of pain and anxiety, an aura that supports me in times of crisis and
gives me a sense of well-being.
じつに「生きていく」ということは、難儀なことです。もう、これ以上、生き続ける
ことはできない、と感じることもあるはずです。そんな場面で、私の助けになって
くれるのが、先にあげた三人の言行です。できるだけ簡単に言ってしまえば、難儀な
人生を、なんとか投げ出さずに生きていく力を、その三人からあたえられているように
思うのです。苦しみや不安にみちた日常の中で、とことん落ち込んでしまうことなく、
きわどいところで自分を支えて、あるゆとりさえ感じさせてくれるオーラを、その三人
に感ずるのです。
Honen is regarded as the founder of the Pure Land sect in Japan, but I do not pay
much attention to sects. I look at Honen primarily as the teacher to whom Shinran
entrusted himself and as the master who Shinran continued to revere all his life.
Rennyo was a follower of Shinran, and he spent his life popularizing Shinran’s teaching
among the masses during a troubled time.
法然は日本浄土教の祖とされている人ですが、私は宗派のことはあまり意識しません。
むしろ親鸞がみずからの師としてすべてを賭け、生涯慕い続けた先達 (せんだつ) として
法然という人を受けとめています。そして、蓮如は親鸞に帰依し、その教えを乱世に
生きる大衆に手渡すことに一生を賭けました。
The teaching of Honen that has made the deepest impression in me is
“the easy practice of the nembutsu” (igyo nembutsu). I think of this as
“birth in the Pure Land through the easy practice” (igyo ojo). Of Shinran’s teachings,
the doctrine of jinen honi seems the most profound. Among the concepts found
in Rennyo’s teachings I am especially drawn to tariki hongan. I think
these three concepts shed different kinds of light on what is essentially
the same reality. Beyond them all reverberates “There is nothing I can do,
” the voice of the Other Power that I discussed at the beginning of this book.
法然の教えの中で、私がもっとも感動するのは、〈易行往生 (いぎょうおうじょう) 〉
ということです。そして親鸞の場合は、〈自然法爾 (じねんほうに) 〉という言葉です。
有名な〈悪人正機 (あくにんしょうき) 〉説よりも、はるかに深いものを感じるのです。
そして蓮如について言えば、〈他力本願(たりきほんがん) 〉というところに
惹きつけられるのですが、この三つの言葉は、つまるところ同じひとつのことに違った
光を当てているような気がしないでもありません。どれも背後には「わがはからいに
あらず」という他力の声が響いているように思えてならないからです。
