What is the mystery of “Namu Amida Butsu”? ――more to come both in English
and in Japanese.
When we earnestly call the Buddha’s Name with a fullness of heart while listening
to the Dharma, our lives gradually become directed toward the Buddha. However,
as our recitation of the nembutsu deepens, there is an eventual reversal
in the direction of that nembutsu. When we say the nembutsu, we are directing
ourselves toward the Buddha as we call out the Buddha’s Name and think on the
Buddha. However, at the same time, we also awaken to a movement in the opposite
direction. That is, we hear the voice of the Buddha that is directing itself to us,
as it names itself and calls out to us. Here, a transcendent religious experience
takes place, which we awaken to at the deepest level of our consciousness.
私たちが、毎日の日暮らしの中で、教法の聴聞とともに、ひとすじに仏の名前を呼ぶ、
称名念仏するということは、私の生き方が、次第に仏の方向に向いていくということで
あります。そしてそのような称名念仏が深まっていくならば、やがてそれが逆転して、
その称名念仏とき、私が仏に向かって、仏の名前を呼び、仏を憶念していることである
が、それはそのまま、仏が私に向かって、自分を名のり、私に呼びかけている、仏の声
だという、逆転の「めざめ」体験が生まれてくるのです。そのように、自己の意識の
もっとも根源的なところの自覚として、超越的、宗教的な経験が成りたってくる、開発
してくるのです。
From our perspective, that is, from the viewpoint of the psychology of the nembutsu,
the practice of saying the nembutsu enables us to “deabsolutize” and unconditionally
reject all worldly views. Each of us busies himself or herself by taking a wife or taking
a husband, bearing children, or seeking fame and fortune. However, when our lives are
occupied with learning the Dharma and saying the nembutsu, all of these things
begin to fade away before long. Eventually, all will be taken from our hands. When
we die, we cannot bring any of them with us; we must leave all of them behind.
Hence, we come to an ever-deepening realization that all such things are empty
and false.
念仏の心理学的な側面、私の側の問題として申しますと、称名念仏するということは、
限りなく世俗的な価値を相対化し、選び捨てていくということであります。私たちは、
お互いに、妻をもち、夫をもち、子どもをかかえて、また名誉や財産を求めて、
あくせくと生きているのですが、仏法を学び、念仏を申して生きるならば、それらは
いずれも、やがては色あせていき、すべてが掌中から離れていくもの、死ぬるときには
何ももってはいけない。置いていかなければならない。すべてが、そらごと、
たわごと、だということが、いよいよ身にしみて、私の内に自覚されてまいります。
When the current state of our own existence is seen in this way and it is gradually
“deabsolutized” and rejected, then our own selves become emptied. It is then,
inevitably, that something comes to be heard. Normally, we are always trying
to cram ourselves full of things. We are constantly filling ourselves up with
self-attachment and ego, and so we are unable to see or hear anything truly.
However, when our selves gradually become emptied, then the eyes of our minds
will open and we will finally be able to see things. The ears of our minds will become
clear and we will be able to hear things for the first time. And we are able to hear
other persons’ voices of distress and pain as well.
このように、自分の存在の実相が自覚され、だんだんと相対化され、捨てられていく
という方向の中で、自己が空になっていくならば、その必然として、何かが聞こえて
くるものです。私たちは、いつも何かをいっぱいに詰めこみ、いっぱいにためこんで
いるから、何も聞こえてこないのです。だんだん自分が空になっていけば、心の眼が
開けて何かが見えてきます。心の耳が澄んできて、いろいろなものが聞こえてくるもの
です。仏さまの声も聞こえてきます。それ以外にも、いろいろな人々の悩みや苦しみの
声が聞こえてきます。私たちはいつも自分の中に、いっぱい我執や、エゴをためている
から、それらが聞こえてこないのです。
When we come to know keenly and fully that the current state of our existence is false,
then we will become able to hear what we had not been able to hear up until now. We
will be able to see what up until now we had not been able to see.
Within this structure, finally, we become able to hear the voice of the Buddha
within the nembutsu. This is how saying the nembutsu works in Shin Buddhism.
いま申したように、現実の自分の存在が、そらごと、たわごとだということが、身に
しみて、しみじみと分かってくるならば、いままで聞こえなかったものが聞こえて
きます。いままで見えなかったものが見えてきます。そういうことの中で、最終的
には、その念仏において、仏の声が聞こえてくるのです。真宗における称名念仏とは、
こういう仕組みをもっているのです。
