あなたは、必ず、「救われる」?――バイリンガルで、どうぞ。
Will you certainly “be saved”? ――more to come both in English and in Japanese.
In Buddhism the fundamental expression for “being saved” involves the idea of
being able to “cross over” (saido). The Sanskrit word that corresponds to
this notion of “crossing over” is uttarana, the original meaning of which is
to “traverse, go across, or pass over.” It means that one transcends or crosses over
many and varied obstructions. The Chinese character sai (済) indicates that one
crosses over a body of water, while do (度) means that one traverses across various
obstacles or hindrances.
仏教において救われるとは、基本的には「済度 (さいど)」をうると表現されますが、
この済度につらなるサンスクリットの原語としては、ウッタラナ (uttarana) という言葉
があります。このウッタラナとは、もとは「横切る」ということで、さまざまな障害を
越えていく、渡っていくことを意味します。漢字の「済度」についても、その「済」
とは、水を渡ることであり、「度」もまた、いろいろな障害を渡っていくことを意味
します。
“Birth” in the Pure Land teachings represents the most direct and straight forward
symbol of the path of “crossing over” and “overcoming.” For human beings,
the most difficult event to cross over and overcome is the problem of death.
浄土教において語られる「往生」とは、そのような済度、乗り越えていく道を、
もっともたんてきに表象したものであります。すなわち、人間にとって、もっとも
渡ること、乗り越えることの困難な事態は、死の問題であります。
When we come face-to-face with death, in that moment, everything that we had
cherished in life, such as status, wealth, and love, becomes useless and valueless.
All human beings are born into this world naked, alone, and possessed of nothing,
and so we must also die naked and alone, bearing nothing at all.
人間は誰でも、ひとたび死に直面すると、そこでは、日ごろ大切にしていた地位も、
財産も、愛情も、死の前ではすべて無に帰してしまいます。人間は、この世に独りで、
何ももたず、裸で生まれてきたように、独りで、何ももたずに、裸で死んでいかねば
なりません。
However, Pure Land Buddhism teaches that when we have realized a change in our
humanity and established a new personal subjectivity in the nembutsu and shinjin
we are able to traverse across all of the afflictions of life and transcend――that is,
cross over――even death itself. Death is not the end of everything. Instead,
it becomes the beginning――the birth――of a new and authentic human life.
In this sense, in the Pure Land teachings, death means that one is born anew.
One “goes to be born” (ōjō, 往生). Salvation in Buddhism, and particularly in
Pure Land Buddhism, is described most clearly through the symbol of birth.
しかしながら、浄土教では、その念仏、信心において、人格変容をとげ、新しく
人格主体を確立したものにとっては、人生のあらゆる苦難をよく渡っていき、その
死さえもよく超えていき、渡っていくことができると教えます。死は決してすべての
終わりではなく、新しいまことの生命の始まり、誕生となるのです。その意味に
おいて、浄土教においては、死は新しい誕生を意味するということで、往いて
生まれる、「往生」というわけです。ここには、仏教、ことに浄土教における救いの
意味が、もっとも明瞭に示されているといえましょう。
