McLuhan was paying attention to the fact that the West was going orient in the sixties
and he had an extraordinary interest in Japanese culture. His important book
“Explorations in communication” includes a thesis of D.T. Suzuki who made Japanese
culture spread around the world――more to come both in English and in Japanese.

Basho, one of the greatest haiku poets in 17 th century Japan, produced this
when his eyes for the first time opened to the poetic and philosophical significance
of haiku:

Furuikeya!

Kawazu tobi-komu

Mizu-no oto!

Oh! Old pond!

A frog leaps in,

The water’s sound!

No objective world, so called, at all existed with its frogs, ponds, etc., until one day
a person known as Basho came suddenly to the scene and heard “the water’s sound.”
The scene, indeed, until then had no existence.

When its value was recognized by Basho this was to Basho the beginning or
the creation of an objective world. Before this, the old pond was there as if it were not
in existence.

It was no more than a dream; it had no reality. It was the occasion of Basho’s hearing
the frog the whole world, including the poet himself, sprung out of Nothingness
ex nihilo.

The leaping, the sound, the frog, and the pond, and Basho were all in one and
one in all. There was an absolute totality, that is an absolute identity, or to use
Buddhist terminology, a perfect state of emptiness (i, e., Sunyata) or suchness
(i, e., Tathata).

It is because of human senses and intellect that we have to bifurcate beauty and
talk about one who sees a beautiful object. As long as we cling to this way of thinking,
there is symbolism. But Buddhist philosophy demands not to be blindfolded
by so-called sense objects, for they will forever keep us away from reality itself.

We see, therefore, that there is something corresponding in Buddhism to what is
ordinary known as symbolism. Buddhism is, so to speak, thoroughly realistic
in the sense that it does not symbolize any particular object in distinction to
something else.

Buddhist would assert that if there is anything at all to be distinguished as a symbol
bearing a specific value, the value here referred to has no realistic sense whatever.
For there can be no such object to be specifically distinguishable.

If anything is a symbol, everything is also equally a symbol, thus putting a stop
to symbolism. Symbolism in Buddhist philosophy may be said to be a different
connotation from what philosophers generally understand by the term.
