When you rightly recognize “awareness,” you will be able to overcome the anxiety and
fear for the future――more to come both in English and in Japanese.

We try to create a future in which the self center will be okay, fully comforted in the right
conditions. But all conditions are temporary and cannot provide the stable contentment
we truly desire.

In recognizing the stability and ever-present nature of awareness, the seeking stops. We
ae fully comforted in the warmth of this recognition.

We see that the future is really nothing more than presently arising words and pictures,
coning and going to awareness. They have no power to destroy this unshakable stability.
We discover that we are eternally okay in the seamless flow of present experiencing.

When we look to hopeful thoughts of future for a sense of self, we are subtly judging our
present experience as being incomplete. Like a carrot that is constantly dangling beyond
our reach, hope become a tyranny in the story, a constant postponement of life.

We become ruled by the belief that contentment lies in some later part of the story when
we get everything in order or arrange our thoughts and feeling about ourselves a certain
way. In relaxing presently as awareness, we let all words and pictures within the future
bundle appear and disappear without having to emphasize them for our identity.

We can still have goals and plans, yet they are held more lightly. This present relaxation
does not leave us in hopeless despair. It leaves us surrendered within the flow of the
present moment, which then unfolds naturally into the next moment. We are not
following a story for a sense of identity. We are simply living in the present moment, as it
is. We come to see that goals and plans are just words and pictures arising and falling.

They can still arise, and we can enjoy them, but we no longer look to them for a sense of
self. We are no longer attached to outcomes. So even if our goals and plans are not met,
we remain naturally surrendered and accepting of whatever actually happens. This
provides an undisturbed contentment, no matter how life actually unfolds.

The self feels separate and looks to the future for completion. However, completion
cannot be found in time, because time is merely a temporary thought. When you believe
you are experiencing time as if it is bearing down on you, or as if you are running out of
time, notice what is really happening. You are emphasizing words or pictures for a sense
of self. There is no way to entertain the notion of this afternoon, tomorrow, next month,
or next year without a temporary thought arising and then falling.

Keep this simple: as words or pictures about the future appear, simply notice them. In
noticing them, and taking a moment if resting in thought-free awareness, you are no
longer looking to the future to define who you are. The words and pictures fall way,
leaving no trace.

The search for future fulfillment dissolves in this seeing. Hopes is no longer needed once
you realize the freedom and completeness in present experiencing. Fear no longer runs
your life, and you no longer have to control outcomes.

This happens naturally through following the main invitation in this method. It is not
forced. It does not come about through personal will, as in trying to be less hopeful, or
less fearful, or trying not to control.

Here let us review “the main invitation” which is repeatedly mentioned in this book

・Recognize awareness

・Let all appearances be as they are

・See that appearances are inseparable
