Erich Fromm is a psychologist well-known for his masterpieces such as “Escape from
Freedom.” He raises an inspirational problem to us in this book, ”The Art of Loving,”
which is a must-read for those who want to deeply know about “love”――more to come
both in English and in Japanese.
Man――of all ages and cultures――is confronted with the solution of one and the same
question: the question of how to overcome separateness, how to achieve union, how to
transcend one’s own individual life and find at-onement.
どの時代のどんな社会においても、人間は同じひとつの問題の解決に迫られてきた。
いかに孤立を克服するか、いかに合一 (ごういつ) を達成するか、いかに個人の生活を
超越して他者と一体化するか、という問題である。
The question is the same for primitive man living in caves, for nomadic man taking care
of his flocks, for the peasant in Egypt, the Phoenician trader, the Roman soldier, the
medieval monk, the Japanese samurai, the modern clerk and factory hand. The question
is the same for it springs from the same ground: the human situation, the conditions of
human existence.
洞窟に住む原始人も、羊の群れを見張る遊牧民も、エジプトの農民も、フェニキアの
商人も、ローマの兵士も、中世の僧侶も、日本のサムライも、現代の事務員や工員も、
直面する問題はみな同じだ。なぜ同じかといえば、その問題が同じ土壌から生まれた
ものだからだ。同じ土壌とは、人間の置かれている状況、人間が生きるための諸条件で
ある。
Also in contemporary Western society the union with the group is the prevalent way of
overcoming separateness. It is a union in which the individual self disappears to a large
extent, and where the aim is to belong to the herd. If I am like everybody else, if I have
no feelings or thoughts which make me different, if I conform in custom, dress, ideas, to
the pattern of the group, I am saved; saved from the frightening experience of aloneness.
現代の西洋社会でも、孤立感を克服するもっとも一般的な方法は、集団に同調すること
である。同調することで、個人の自我はほとんど消え、集団の一員になりきることが
できる。もし私がみんなと同じになり、他の人とちがった思想や感情をもたず、習慣に
おいても服装においても思想においても、集団全体に同調すれば、私は救われる。孤独
という恐ろしい経験から救われる。
Most people are not even aware of their need to conform. They live under the illusion
that they follow their own ideas and inclinations, that they are individuals, that they have
arrived at their opinions as the result of their own thinking――and that it just happens
that their ideas are the same as those of the majority.
ところがたいていの人は、集団に同調したいという欲求を自分がもっていることに、
気づいてすらいない。誰もがこんな幻想を抱いている――私は自分の考えや好みに
したがって行動している。私は個人主義者で、私の意見は自分で考えた結果であり、
それがみんなの意見と同じだとしても、それはたんなる偶然にすぎない、と。
The consensus of all serves as a proof for the correctness of “their” ideas. Since there is
still a need to feel some individuality, such need is satisfied with regard to minor
differences; the initials on the handbag or the sweater, the name plate of the bank teller,
the belongings to the Democratic as against the Republican party, to the Elks instead of
to the Shriners become the expression of individual differences. The advertising slogan of
“it is different” shows up this pathetic need for difference, when in reality there is hardly
any left.
彼らは、みんなと意見が一致するときは、「自分の」意見の正しさが証明されたと
考える。それでも、自分は少しは他人とちがっていると思いたがるが、そうした欲求
は、ごく些細なちがいでみたされる。ハンドバッグやセーターについているブランド名
とか、銀行員の名札とか、共和党ではなく民主党を支持するとか、シュライン会では
なくエルクス会 (いずれもアメリカの友愛結社) に入る、といったことが、自分と他の人
とちがうことを示す証 (あかし) となる。「これは他のとはちがいます」という宣伝
コピーは、他の人とはちがっていたいというこの悲痛な願いをよく物語っている。
だが、実際にはほとんどちがっていないのだ。
