「自己」というものの正体を知りたいと思う時、科学は、自己という対象から離れ、
客観的にそれを追求しようとします。これに対して、禅はまったく違うやり方で、自己
の正体に迫ると言います。でも、どうやって?「禅の達人」鈴木大拙の言葉に耳を
傾けてみましょう――バイリンガルで、どうぞ。
When man wants to know the real nature of his “Self,” he tries to objectively investigate it
with being apart from the object, Self. On the other hand, it is said that Zen will come
closer to the real nature of Self in a completely different way. But in what way? Let’s listen
to Daisetz Suzuki, “a master of Zen” ―― more to come both in English and in Japanese.
Zen thus advises us to reverse the direction science is pursuing if we are really to get
acquainted with the Self, and then the Self is taken hold of from within and not from the
outside. This means that the Self is to know itself without going out of itself. Some may
ask, “How can that be possible? Knowledge always implies a dichotomy, the knower and
the object known.”
もし我々が衷心から、なんとかして真の自己を把握したいと念願するのならば、この
科学が追求する方向をいっぺんヒックリ返さなければならぬ。すると初めて自己が内面
から把握される。決して外面からではない。これはつまり、自己は自己の内側からのみ
自己自身を知るように出来ている、ということである。こう言うと、では、どうして
そんなことが可能であるのか、知識とは、必ず二つに分かれて知るものと知られるもの
とがなければ成り立たぬものではないか、と言いたい人もいるだろう。
I answer: “Self-knowledge is possible only when the identification of subject and object
takes place; that is, when scientific studies come to an end, and lay down all their
gadgets of experimentation, and confess that they cannot continue their researches any
further unless they can transcend themselves by performing a miraculous leap over into
a realm of absolute subjectivity.”
これに対して私のいわくは「自己知とは主と客とが一体になって初めて可能なのだ」と
いうことである。これは科学者が科学的研究をつくしてしまって実験用の道具いっさい
を放下したあげく、もうこれ以上研究はどうしても続けることはできない、この上は
ただもう絶対の主体性の領域そのものの中に飛び込むという離れ業をやってのけるより
仕方がない、と告白する時なのである。
The realm of absolute subjectivity is where the Self abides. “To abide” is not quite correct
here, because it only suggests the statical aspect of the Self. But the Self is ever moving
or becoming. It is a zero which is a staticity, and at the same time an infinity, indicating
that it is all the time moving. The Self is dynamic.
この絶対主体性の領域とはすなわち自己の棲家である。「棲む」というのも厳密に
言えば当たらぬ。なぜかと言えば棲むというのも自己の静止した姿のみを指摘するから
である。しかし自己とは断えざる流動であり変化である。静的に見た自己は零であり
同時にその動態面は無限なのである。この無限とは片時の間も動きを休めることがない
という意味が含まれている。自己とはダイナミックなのである。
Thus, as the Self moves from zero to infinity and from infinity to zero, it is no way
an object of scientific studies. As it is absolute subjectivity, it eludes all our efforts to
locate it at any objectively definable spot. As it is so elusive and cannot be taken hold of,
we cannot experiment with it in any scientific way. We cannot entrap it by any objectively
constructed media.
このように自己とは或る時は零から無限に転じ、或る時は無限から零に転ずる。それは
まるっきり科学的追及の方途を絶したものである。その性質が絶対主体的なのだから、
どんなに懸命になってその場所をいわゆる客観的に位置付けようと試みたところで、
なんの手がかりも得られはしない。つかまえようとするその手もとからスルリと
スリ抜けてしまうのであるから、科学的方法というものでもってこれを実験台にのせる
ことも出来ないし、どんな科学的媒質を使用してみたところで、これによって自己を
その中にとらえるわけにいかぬ。
With all scientific talents this can never be performed, because it is not in the nature of
things within their sphere of operation. The Self when properly adjusted knows how to
discover itself without going through the process of objectification.
これは世界中のすぐれた科学的頭脳をすべて動員して来たところで成功し得るものでは
ない。なぜかと言えば、元来科学者の実験のおよび得るものとは、根本的に性質を異に
するからである。自己には自己固有の扱い方がある。この扱い方によると自己は決して
客観化などという迂遠な筋道を通らなくても、自己が自分で自分を発見する途を承知
しているのである。
