English for Happiness

“What Makes You Not A Buddhist” No.10――Was the final goal of the Buddha “peace of mind” through freedom from suffering, rather than happiness?

It is said that, according to Epicurus, a Greek philosopher, the ultimate objective of life is
to attain “ataraxia,” the serene state of mind that nothing disturbs. Was the goal of the
Buddha the same with this?―― more to come both in English and in Japanese.

It was not Siddhartha’s aim to be happy. His path does not ultimately lead to happiness.
Instead it is a direct route to freedom from suffering, freedom from delusion and
confusion. Thus nirvana is neither happiness nor unhappiness――it goes beyond all such
dualistic concepts. Nirvana is peace.

We could say that simply understanding the truth brings about the attainment of
enlightenment. To the extent that we understand the truth, we can progress through the
stages of enlightenment, called “bodhisattva levels.” If a child is frightened by a hideous
monster at the theater, the fear can be alleviated by introducing the child to the actor
out of costume backstage. Similarly, to the degree that you can see behind all
phenomena und understand the truth, you are liberated. Likewise, if one partially
understands the truth, there is an equivalent liberation.

A sculptor may create a beautiful woman out of marble, but he should know better than
to have passion toward his creation. Like Pygmalion with his statue of Galatea, we create
our friends and our enemies as well, but we forget that it is so. Because of our lack of
mindfulness, our creations are transformed into something solid and real, and we
become ever more entangled. When you fully realize, not just intellectually, that
everything is just your creation, you will be free.
