English for Happiness

“Joan Halifax: Standing At The Edge” No.7――What is the most appropriate way for us to deal with someone’s suffering?

It is said that when we have too much empathy with someone who is suffering, we end
up with “empathic distress” that eventually gives rise to an unhappy consequence for him
or her and for ourselves. Then, what should we do?――more to come both in English
and in Japanese.

Another important interpersonal skill is setting boundaries. This is not a selfish act, and it
doesn’t mean pushing people away or “othering” them (objectifying those whom you
think are in a separate, often subordinate, category from you). Good boundaries protect
us from empathic distress; we remember that, from one point of view, we are not the
suffering person.

If we start to overidentify with someone who is suffering, practicing the Three Tenets is
a powerful method for recognizing this slide and transforming empathy into compassion
by remaining open (Not-Knowing), coming alongside suffering (Bearing Witness), and
responding with care (Compassionate Action).

If we apply these practices and perspectives, at some point our response to the suffering
of others might become selfless and simple. Until that time or that moment, you and I
have to keep showing up, practicing the Three Tenets, and learning from our experience.
Being honest and vigilant with ourselves can keep us on the healthy side of altruism.

It’s important not to engage in self-judgment but rather to be friendly and curious about
ourselves. In the Vegetable Roots Discourse, Ming Dynasty philosopher Hong Zicheng
writes, “Soil that is dirty grows the countless things. Water that is clear has no fish. Thus
as a mature person you properly include and retain a measure of grime.” These are wise
words, as few of us, if any, are perfect altruists.

Altruism might take us to our edge. Standing at that edge――and even falling off it, if
that’s what happens――can ultimately nourish our humility and basic humanity. These
words capture the essence of altruism: “May I do a great deal of good without ever
knowing it.” Indeed, may we practice Not-Knowing, along with Bearing Witness and
Compassionate Action, with a whole, open, and humble heart.
