時代を超えて、読み継がれてきた名著「善の研究」。宗教を巡って、世界中で様々な
問題が起きている今だからこそ、我々日本人が読み返すべき内容が書かれていると
思います。宗教の本質とは何か?――バイリンガルで、どうぞ。

“An Inquiry Into The Good” is the masterpiece which has been read throughout the ages.
I think that this book contains what we, the Japanese, should re-read now, when various
problems arise concerning religion around the world: What is the essence of religion?

Religion is the relationship between God and human beings. We can think about God in
various ways, but it is perhaps most appropriate to view God as the foundation of the
universe; and “human beings” I am referring to our individual consciousness.

宗教とは神と人との関係である。神とは種々の考え方もあるであろうが、これを宇宙の
根本と見ておくのが最も適当であろうと思う。しかして、人とは我々の個人的意識を
指すのである。

God and human in which they share the same nature――that is, a relationship like that
between father and child. But for God and the human to share the same losses and
gains and for God to save and protect us is not yet true religion. God must be the
foundation of the universe and our own foundation as well. To take refuge in God is to
take refuge in that foundation.

すべての宗教の本(もと)には神人同性の関係がなければならぬ。すなわち父子の関係が
なければならぬ。しかし、単に神と人と利害を同じうし神は我らを助け我らを保護する
というのでは未だ真の宗教ではない、神は宇宙の根本であって兼ねて我らの根本で
なければならぬ、我らが神に帰するのはその本(もと)に帰するのである。

God must also be the goal of the myriad things in the universe and therefore the goal of
humans as well. Each person finds in God his or her own true goal. Just as the hands
and feet are parts of the human, the human is a part of God. Our taking refuge in God
seems in a certain respect to be a loss of the self, but in another respect it is the way we
find the self.

また、神は万物の目的であってすなわちまた人間の目的でなければならぬ、人は
各々(おのおの)神において己(おの)が真の目的を見出すのである。手足が人の物なるが
如く、人は神の物である。我々が神に帰するのは一方より見れば己を失うようで
あるが、一方より見れば己を得る所以(ゆえん)である。

Christ said, “He who finds his life shall lose it, and he who loses his life for may sake will
find it,” and this is the purest form of religion. The relationship between God and the
human in true religion must be of this sort.

キリストが「その生命を得る者はこれを失い我がために生命を失う者はこれを得べし」
といわれたのが宗教の最も醇(じゅん)なるものである。真の宗教における神人の関係は
必ずかくの如きものでなければならぬ。

We pray and offer thanks to God not for the sake of the self’s existence, but for our
return to God as the source of the self――and we are grateful for our return to God.
Moreover, God loves people not to give worldly happiness but to return them to God.
God is the source of life, and we live only in God. In this respect alone is religion filled
with life and does the feeling of true piety arise.

我々が神に祈りまたは感謝するというも、自己の存在のためにするのではない、己が
本分の家郷たる神に帰せんことを祈りまたこれに帰せしことを感謝するのである。
また、神が人を愛するというのもこの世の幸福を与うるのではない、これをして己に
帰せしめるのである。神は生命の源である、我はただ神において生く。かくありてこそ
宗教は生命に充ち、真の敬虔(けいけん)の念も出(い)でくるのである。

The most profound religion is thus established upon the unity of God and humans, and
the true meaning of religion is found in grasping the significance of this unity, in breaking
one’s own consciousness and experiencing the lofty universal spirit that functions at the
base of consciousness.

かく最深の宗教は神人同体の上に成立することができ、宗教の真意はこの神人合一の
意義を獲得するにあるのである。すなわち、我々は意識の根底において自己の意識を
破りて働く堂々たる宇宙的精神を実験するにあるのである。

Faith should not be bestowed from without by a legend or theory――it should be
cultivated from within. As Jakob Boehme said, we arrive at God through the deepest
internal birth (die innerste Geburt).

信念というのは伝説や理論によりて外から与えられるべきものではない、内より
磨き出さるべきものである。ヤコブ・ベーメのいったように、我々は最深なる
内生die innerste Geburt によりて神に到るのである。

In this internal rebirth we see God directly and believe in God, and at the same time we
find our true life and feel infinite power. Faith is not mere knowledge, but an intuition and
a vital force in the above sense. Our unifying power functions at the base of all our
mental activity, and we call it our self or personality.

我々はこの内面的再生においてただちに神を見、これを信ずるとともに、ここに自己の
真生命を見出し無限の力を感ずるのである。信念とは単なる知識ではない、かかる意味
における直観であるとともに活力であるのである。すべて我々の精神活動の根底には
一つの統一力が働いている、これを我々の自己といいまた人格ともいうのである。
