人間が他の動物と違う大きな原因のひとつが、「理性」を持つということ。それ故に、
様々な恩恵を受けてきたが、反面、様々な困難にも直面しています―― 20世紀を
代表する心理学者のひとりエーリッヒ・フロムの言葉に耳を傾けてみましょう――

To have “reason” is one of the great causes for human beings to differentiate them from
other animals. Therefore, they have been given various benefits. On the other hand, they
have to face various difficulties: Let’s listen to the words of Erich Fromm, one of the
representative psychologists in the 20 th century―― more to come both in English and
in Japanese.
Self-awareness, reason, and imagination have disrupted the ‘harmony’ which
characterizes animal existence. Their emergence has made man into an anomaly, into the
freak of the universe. He is part of nature, subject to her physical laws and unable to
change them, yet he transcends the rest of nature. He is set apart while being a part; he
is homeless, yet chained to the home he shares with all creatures. Cast into this world at
an accidental place and time, he is forced out of it, again accidentally.
自覚や理性や想像というものは、動物的生存を特徴づけている『調和』を瓦解させて
しまった。それらの出現は人間を変則となし、造化のいたずらとなしてしまった。人間
は自然の一部であって自然法則に順応し、そのような法則を変えることはできないが、
しかもまた宇宙の他のすべてのものを卓越する。人間は部分的な存在でありながらまた
独立した存在でもある。人間は故郷をもたない。しかも人間はまた他のすべての生物と
ともに、同じ故郷にしばられている。人間は時もところも偶然にこの世界の中に
投げ込まれ、そしてまた偶然にそこから引き離されて行く。
Being aware of himself, he realizes his powerlessness and the limitations of his existence.
He visualizes his own end: death. Never is he free from the dichotomy of his existence: he
cannot rid himself of his mind, even he should want to; he cannot rid himself of his body
as long as he is alive――and his body makes him want to be alive.
自覚をもつゆえに、人間は自分の存在の無力と制限とを感得する。人間は自分の終わり
を、死を、ありありと描き出す。人間は決して自らの二分性から逃れられない。人間
は、たとえ自分で欲しても、自分の心を追い払うことはできない。生きている限り
また、自分の身体を抹殺しえず、そして身体をもつ故に人間は生きようとのぞむので
ある。
Reason, man’s blessing, is also his curse; it forces him to cope everlastingly with the task
of solving an insoluble dichotomy. Human existence is different in this respect from that
of all other organisms; it is in a state of constant and unavoidable disequilibrium. Man’s
life cannot ‘be lived’ by repeating the pattern of his species; he must live.
人間の光栄であるはずの理性は、またかれの呪詛でもある。理性は終始人間を強いて、
解決不可能の二分性を解決しようとする課題に向かわせる。人間存在はこの点に
おいて、他のあらゆる生物とは異なるのである。人間の存在は、絶えまない、
避けがたい、不均衡の状態である。人間の生活は、その種族の生活様式をただ繰り返す
ことによって『過ごされて行く』ものではない。人間は自分で生きなければならない
のである。
Man is the only animal that can be bored, that can be discontented, that can feel evicted
from paradise. Man is the only animal for whom his own existence is a problem which he
has to solve and from which he cannot escape. He cannot go back to the prehumen state
of harmony with the nature; he must proceed to develop his reason until he becomes the
master of nature, and of himself.
人間は、退屈し、不満を覚え、楽園を追われたと感ずることのできる、唯一の動物で
ある。人間とは、自分にとって自分自身の存在が、自分で解かねばならぬ問題であり、
またその問題から逃れることのできない、唯一の動物である。人間は、自然との調和を
保っている人間以前の状態に帰ることはできない。人間は、自分が自然の主となり、
また自分自身の主となるまで、理性を発展させて行かなければならない。
