Now more and more people are getting interested in Buddhism. I would like to introduce
the world-bestseller which tells us the essence of the Buddhist teachings in
easy-to-understand words―― more to come both in English and in Japanese.
One is a Buddhist if he or she accepts the following truths:
All compounded things are impermanent.
All emotions are pain.
All things have no inherent existence.
Nirvana is beyond concepts.
仏教徒とは、次の四つの真実を受け入れた者のことを言います。
組み合わせによって成り立つすべてのものは無常である。
すべての感情は苦しみである。
すべてのものは本質的には存在しない。
涅槃とは概念を超越したものである。
These four statements, spoken by the Buddha himself, are known as “the four seals.”
Traditionally, seal means something like a hall-mark that confirms authenticity. For the
sake of simplicity and flow we will refer to these statements herein as both seals and
“truths.”
これら四つの言葉はブッダ自身によって語られたものであり、「四法印」として
知られています。昔から、印はあるものの真正性を裏付ける証明のような意味合いを
持ちます。ここからは、話をわかりやすくスムーズにするために、これら四つの言葉
を、印と呼ぶと同時に「真実」と呼ぶことにしましょう。
The message of the four seals is meant to be understood literally, not metaphorically or
mystically――and meant to be taken seriously. But the seals are not edicts or
commandments. With a little contemplation one sees that there is nothing moralistic or
ritualistic about them. There is no mention of good or bad behavior.
四法印の教えはその言葉どおりに理解されなければならず、隠喩的に、あるいは神秘的
にとらえられるべきではありません。また、真剣に受け止められるべきものです。
しかし、これらの印は命令やおきてではありません。少し考えてみれば、四法印に
道徳的、儀礼的要素がないことは明らかです。そこには良い行いや悪い行いといった
ことは書かれていません。
They are secular truths based on wisdom, and wisdom is the primary concern of
a Buddhist. Morals and ethics are secondary. A few puffs of a cigarette and a little fooling
around don’t prevent someone from becoming a Buddhist. That is not to say that we
have license to be wicked or immoral.
これらは宗教とは関係のない、智慧にもとづく真実であり、仏教徒にとっての最大の
関心事が、この智慧なのです。道徳や倫理はそれほど重要ではありません。ちょっと
タバコをふかしたり、多少遊び回ったからといって、仏教徒になれないわけではないの
です。しかし、これは不正や不道徳をはたらいてもよいという意味ではありません。
But what makes you not a Buddhist?
If you cannot accept that all compounded or fabricated things are impermanent,
if you believe that there is some essential substance or concept that is permanent,
then you are not a Buddhist.
If you cannot accept that all emotions are pain, if you believe that actually
some emotions are purely pleasurable, then you are not a Buddhist.
If you cannot accept that all phenomena are illusory and empty, if you believe that
certain things do exist inherently, then you are not a Buddhist.
And if you think that enlightenment exists within the spheres of time, space, and
power, then you are not a Buddhist.
それでは、仏教徒ではない、というのはどういう場合でしょうか。
組み合わされたり、作り上げられたりしたすべてのものは無常であるということを
受け入れられず、永遠に存在する本質的な物質や概念があると信じている
としたら、あなたは仏教徒ではありません。
すべての感情は苦しみであるということを受け入れられず、純粋に心地よい感情も
あると信じているとしたら、あなたは仏教徒ではありません。
すべての現象は幻想であり空 (くう) であるということを受け入れられず、本質的に
存在するものがあると信じているとしたら、あなたは仏教徒ではありません。
また、悟りというものが時間、空間、そして力の及ぶ範囲の中に存在すると考えて
いるとしたら、あなたは仏教徒ではありません。
Anyone who accepts these four seals, even independently of Buddha’s teachings, even
never having heard the name Shakyamuni Buddha, can be considered to be on the same
path as he.
ブッダの教えを聞いたことがない人でも、釈迦牟尼仏の名前を一度も聞いたことがない
人でも、これらの四法印を受け入れる人はみな、ブッダと同じ道をたどっていると
考えることができます。
