It is said that the growing body of results in the area of psychology reveals that
expressive writing about past traumatic events has many beneficial
consequences――more to come both in English and in Japanese.

It makes sense that if writing helps people find meaning and resolution in their trauma,
they might find their emotional reactions to it more manageable and might be less
disturbed by unwanted ruminations. The process of creating a narrative about your
experience, telling a story, can lead you to accept it.

Furthermore, writing involves recording your thoughts externally, whether on a page in
your diary or a Word document. This may allow you to unburden yourself by chronicling
your emotions, thoughts, and memories outside yourself and thus allowing yourself to
move past your troubles.

So, for your first exercise in coping, get out a notebook, PowerBook, diary, or a sheet of
paper, and follow the direction given to the Pennebaker’s participants:
For the next four days, I would like for you to write about your very deeper thoughts and
feelings about the most traumatic experience of your entire life. You may write about the
same general issues or experiences on all days of writing or on different traumas each
day.

At minimum, you should spend fifteen minutes writing each day, and you should write for
several days in a row, for as long as needed. You could even start a blog. Be patient and
persistent, and watch the benefits unfold.

As you can tell, expressive writing is fairly open-ended. You can write whatever you want
about your loss or trauma, as long as you strive to express your emotions honestly and
fully.
